14 November: Introduction to Realism & The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses

Objective:

I can pull textual evidence to support my analysis of a text and read to understand the stylistic choices made by the author (RL 1 & 4).

Entry Task:

As you come in, grab your binder, a notes sheet off the front table, and discuss the following questions with a classmate. Be prepared to share:

  • Do you know who Nelson Mandela is?

  • What, if anything, do you know about apartheid?

  • What might a story set during apartheid be like?

After sharing a few answers, we will watch a short video to have a basic understanding of apartheid, and then we will revisit the last question.

What’s Going On:

Today we will take a few notes to overview our next focus genre: Realism. Complete your notes by following along with this presentation.

After our notes, we will read our next story: “The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses” by Bessie Head. We will start with a focus on our author before moving into the story.

Exit Task:

Depending on the amount of class time remaining, we will either read the short story or save it for the start of class tomorrow. Either way, store your work in the back of your binder to come back to tomorrow.
