10 November: “(citizen) (illegal)” by Jose Olivarez

Objective:

I can analyze how an author uses literary devices to convey a character’s complex life experiences; I can also connect this perspective to our unit themes (RI 2 & 6).

Entry Task:

As you come into class, grab your binder and our final unit text off the front table.

What’s Going On:

Today we will read our final unit text: (citizen) (illegal) by Jose Olivarez. Carefully follow along and annotate all over your copy of the story while keeping in mind our unit themes:

  • Invisibility: Because of our societal norms and values, we unfairly and systematically prevent those outside of the norm from being truly seen and valued, and this forces many groups of people to become invisible members of our society.

  • Acceptance: When we accept ourselves and others for our individual understanding of the world and for our differences, we will gain increased open-mindedness, and we will better understand everyone’s humanity.

Exit Task:

The remaining class time is yours to select two of our unit texts we have focused on this week to finalize and perfect your thematic CCC writes. Keep in mind the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the week, show your best work, and submit your two writes for feedback.
