27 September: CCC Writes & Previewing Things Fall Apart

Objective:

I can preview a text to begin to understand Chinua Achebe’s motivations for writing Things Fall Apart, citing textual evidence to support my inferences about Achebe’s motivations (RI 1, 6, & W 9).

Entry Task:

As you come into class, grab Claim, Cite, Clarify notes page from the front table and add this to the resources section of your notebook. We will begin the day by briefly overviewing this writing structure we will use throughout this course using this slideshow; at the end of the day, you will write your first CCC using the structure.

What’s Going On:

Today you will need two different colored pencils as we preview our first novel: Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Using this slideshow, we will examine portions of the book, the author, and some historical context to make predictions for why Achebe wrote this novel.

To finalize the novel preview, you will write a CCC making a claim about Chinua Achebe’s purpose for writing his novel.

Exit Task:

Reread your writing and use the rubric to self-assess your work before submitting it for feedback.
