Objective:

I can identify various poetic devices and have a class discussion to add more meaning to my understanding of a poem (L 5 & SL 1).

Entry Task:

As you come into class, prepare to play a round of Blooket to focus on our unit terms.

After, grab your notebook and a poem from the front table. Read through it and complete a Formalist analysis by neatly labeling the poetic devices you can identify. We will discuss what you identified together, and then you will complete the analysis questions.

What’s Going On:

Today we will move beyond a Formalist analysis of poetry to pull deeper meanings. We will watch a short video on the history of Israel-Palestine. As you watch, make at least three connections. These connections can be to history you know, events going on in our world today, events that have happened to you, or connections you can make to other texts we have read.

After watching the video for background knowledge, we will read an article related directly to our poem: “The Enduring Significance of Mahmoud Darwish’s Controversial Poem “Identity Card.” Follow along through the reading and answer the questions directly from the text.

Exit Task:

Spend time answering the final two questions on your document and turn this into the bin. Spend time cleaning up around you.
